Frequently Asked Questions
What sized bead should I use?
Selecting the ideal bead size starts with trying to identify the size of egg or egg cluster that may be present in the water you are fishing. Generally speaking 8mm imitates a steelhead egg, 10mm or 12mm imitates a salmon egg.
How do I determine which color will work best?
It depends on water clarity and egg you are trying to imitate. If the water is very clear, more standard subtle oranges, peaches and dull yellows work best. In stained water, brighter yellows work best. If you are targeting salmon or fall steelhead or trout, pinks generally perform better.
What size Tail Out or Skeena hook should I use for what sized bead?
Generally speaking, the bead should be able to fit inside the gap of the hook. For 8mm beads this would be Tail Out or Skeena 6. For 10mm beads size 4, and for 12mm beads size 2 Tail Out or Skeena hook.
I have heard about double bead rigs, can you explain them more?
Double bead rigs are far more effective than single bead rigs in most situations. Generally a contrasting color combo will work most often. Check out this blog article for more information.
